Contextualise SolutionsOver the past few years, we have witnessed remarkable innovations in fields such as AI, AR, drones, and EVs, among others. For those of us on the African continent, a developing part of the world, we often find ourselves as recipients rather than creators of these technologies. This brings me to an important thought I’d like to share today. These technologies clearly serve as solutions to problems we face as a global community. They challenge the status quo and enable us to envision a new future. However, we must exercise caution when applying these technologies across different nations. Solutions are crafted within specific contexts and scenarios where they have proven effective. When we adopt these solutions, as we frequently do, it is crucial to contextualize them to fully harness their potential. Failing to do so may not only prevent us from realizing their benefits but also risk exacerbating our existing problems, creating more issues than we solve. Consider, for example, the solution of electric vehicles (EVs). While EVs are a sensible solution for combating climate change, their adoption poses significant challenges for many African countries due to electricity shortages. This does not mean we cannot have EVs on our streets; rather, it highlights the need to prioritize solving our energy crisis before considering widespread EV adoption. Developed nations have already overcome energy challenges and are less affected by electricity issues that developing countries face. This principle applies to many other solutions as well. Adopting technologies using the developed world’s template often proves ineffective. To truly benefit from these innovations, we must contextualize solutions to suit our unique circumstances and needs. Beyond Your Toil Hello Friends, This week, I've been reflecting on a powerful story from the Gospel of Luke (5:1-11) that holds a profound lesson for our professional and personal endeavours. Jesus is preaching by the Lake of Gennesaret, surrounded by a crowd. He steps into a boat belonging to Simon Peter and teaches from there. After finishing, He turns to Simon and says, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon, a seasoned fisherman, replies with understandable...
Salary vs Time There’s something about the concept of a salary that continues to fascinate and reveal itself to me over time. It’s as if it’s designed to hide its true nature from us when we first receive it, only slowly showing its reality as our lives change. I’ve often found myself looking at someone’s income with questions. For some, I wonder, "How do you make this work for a family?" when the number seems too small. For others—those I consider privileged top earners—who claim it's still...
The Euphoria of Interbank Games Ever had a week start so well it feels surreal? Mine began with an unexpected adrenaline rush: I witnessed the electrifying finals of the Interbank Games’ tug-of-war championship. And wow it’s been years since I felt that kind of raw competitive energy. Picture this: Teams of bankers, sleeves rolled up, digging their heels into the mud. The crowd roaring, ropes straining, and that heart-pounding moment when momentum swings in a split second. It wasn’t just a...
